Help and limits at Red Shores

At either hall, a good night ends at a point you set before leaving home. The island's main help is listed below, beginning with a phone line that is answered around the clock.

Pick your end point first

Settle two things before leaving the house: how much the evening can cost you and what time you will go home. Jotting them on paper can help. Step off the floor once in a while for a stroll or a bite to eat. Once that amount is spent, the night at Red Shores is over, even with time still left on the clock.

Every game in any casino is built with a house edge. Over many plays, players as a group give back more than they take home. Losing is the expected result, so the amount you set is the price of the evening, not a stake to win back.

Someone on the line, day or night

PEI's Gambling Support Line can be reached at 1-855-255-4255. Calling is free and confidential. Someone picks up at all hours, seven days a week, and calls have no time limit. You may phone about your own gambling or out of concern for a family member or friend. The line is operated by the Department of Health and Wellness of PEI through its Gambling and Gaming Support Unit.

Both halls also have a PlayWise hub with information on keeping play healthy. The PlayWise Advisor takes calls at 902-620-4267 and email at playwiseredshores@alc.ca.

How a Break in Play works

Break in Play is the Red Shores name for self-exclusion: you ask to be barred from the gaming floors, and the bar holds at both halls. Short breaks run 30, 60 or 90 days. Long ones run 6, 12, 24 or 36 months. You can arrange one at either hall or away from them, for instance through Addiction Services, and PlayWise Advisors take calls at 902-620-4267.

Setting one up takes roughly 20 minutes with two staff members. The request has to come from you, since nobody can arrange a break for someone else.

A confirmed break cannot be cancelled. Anyone who walks in while it is running is shown out, their credits, chips or vouchers are given to United Way, and the break may be extended. To return, a Return to Play request is needed: it involves a review, an on-site meeting and a wait of 24 hours. If no such request is made, the break just continues.

Quick answers

Who answers the support line after the halls close?

Dial 1-855-255-4255, the PEI Gambling Support Line, and a person answers at any hour, seven days a week. Calling costs nothing, the conversation stays confidential, and nobody puts a time limit on it.

Can a friend put me on a Break in Play?

A break has to come from you, since nobody can arrange one for someone else. A worried friend can still call the support line, which is there for family and friends too.

What happens to my credits if I go in during a break?

You are shown out, and any credits, chips or vouchers you have are given to United Way. The break can also be made longer.
